The lifesaving programs include the Canadian Swim Patrol and the Bronze Medal awards. The National Lifeguard Service® awards include NL Pool, NL Waterpark, NL Waterfront and NL Surf. The Leadership Training Programs are for instructors, examiners and trainers of the Society’s programs.
Canadians drown while involved in a wide variety of activities in many types of aquatic settings that range from rivers to backyard pools. Public education is delivered through the Society’s swim programs, National Drowning Prevention Week and various community action initiatives.
The sport of lifesaving is the only known sport in the world where participants first learn the skills for a humanitarian purposes and only later use them in competition.
The Lifesaving Society is recognized as a leader in developing standards for activities in, on and around water. Through its Safety Standards Commission, the Society sets national aquatic environment standards and clarifies existing provincial/territorial regulations.
