Community Drowning Prevention Coalition Resources

The Lifesaving Society Canada is pleased to share drowning prevention resources with Community Drowning Prevention Coalitions.  If any additional resources or supports are needed, do not hesitate to reach out to your provincial/territorial Branch of the Lifesaving Society.

National Drowning Prevention Week (NDPW)

Over 450 people fatally drown annually in Canada, making it the second leading cause of unintentional death for children and the third leading cause of unintentional death for adults.  The Lifesaving Society designates the third full week in July as National Drowning Prevention Week (NDPW) to focus community and media attention on the drowning problem and drowning prevention.

This year, National Drowning Prevention Week will be held from 21st – 27th July 2024.  Consistent with the Canadian Drowning Prevention Plan, daily themes include: fatal drowning, non-fatal drowning, backyard pool and open water safety, Swim to Survive®, supervision of children, boating safety and PFD wear, and alcohol and substance use.  A guide has been developed for Affiliates, Community groups and Coalitions designed to provide information that can be shared on each of the designated days.

Seasonal Water Safety Messages

The Lifesaving Society Canada recognizes the value that Community Coalitions bring to our mission to prevent drowning and reduce water-related injury.

Action and impact are best achieved by individuals in their own communities.  With that in mind, the Lifesaving Society is inviting you to use our 2024 Seasonal Water Safety Messages to help promote timely water safety and drowning prevention messages in your communities.

The messages are broken down into categories, allowing you to select the message and/or social media image/post that is most appropriate to your community at any given time (e.g. ice safety may be relevant in central Canada, but not on the West Coast).
